The Wisdom Classroom
The Master Teacher is emphatic and, even seems urgent, in His instruction on wisdom and understanding. Since the creation He has watched those created in His image stumble through their earthly years. We run head long into poor circumstances that could have been avoided. We energetically bounce into a position of responsibility that was meant for another. Worry and fear control our thoughts as we observe the hurting people around us. Questions turn into paralysis and lack of action as we weigh the pros and cons of how to minister to those who are lost. And, of course, our mouths spill out what we think, before realizing the effect of our words. Oh, yes! We need the wisdom of God!
My Bible has as a subtitle for Proverbs 4, 'Security in Wisdom', verses 1 through 9, 'Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding; For I give you good doctrine; Do not forsake my law. When I was my father's son, Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, He also taught me, and said to me: "Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you." '
Part of the 'how to' in obtaining the wisdom is clear in verses 20-22, 'My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.'
My photo reveals the morning sun removing the shadows of darkness on this street, replacing it with the light of the sun. Just as the sun removes darkness, God's light of understanding and wisdom come to us with the help of the Holy Spirit in many different ways. On occasion the 'light comes on' for us during prayer or while meditating on God's Word. A series of sermons or teachings can lead us to understanding on a crucial issue. Desert experiences in our lives are rich with understanding and wisdom. At times, the full understanding of mysteries in our lives, doesn't become clear for months or years. But, trusting that God will direct and guide us until that clear understanding arrives, is wisdom, in itself.
